I just finished the second volume of Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle, The Confusion, and I have to say that I haven’t been as entertained by a book since Dorothy Dunnet’s King Hereafter. If the first volume illustrated the intellectual battle between emerging Natural Philosophers and ancient Alchemists, as well as the developing theories and practice of “finanace” and “banking,” then the second volume is pure adventure of the grandest nature. Who would have thought that a simple highjacking of a ship full of Solomon’s Gold would upset so many important people? And that’s just the first 100 pages.

Top notch writing, with a plot as unpredictable as quicksilver. Highly recommended.

Beth has been accepted to graduate school at the University of Texas, so we’re loading up and moving to Austin. We’re sad to leave our cozy little house in Uptown, but we’re excited about the opportunity. More details to come.
